Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Downpours, Hail, 65 MPH Winds, Isolated Tornadoes Possible

As a new round of storms with gusty winds approaches, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the region.

It was issued at around 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 3 and lasts until 8 p.m. Monday for the counties in New York and northern New Jersey shown in yellow in the image above..

There are chances of hail and strong winds up to 65 miles per hour, with lighting also possible, the National Weather Service said, noting that severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.

"A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area," the National Weather Service said in a statement. "Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings."

The outlook for Tuesday, July 4 calls for clouds with some breaks of sunshine in the morning followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening throughout the region.

The high temperature on Independence Day will generally be in the low-80s.
